Register your domain

What is a domain name?

A domain name is the address of your website that people type in the browser’s URL/address bar to visit your website.

In other words, if your website was a house, then your domain name will be its address.

An example of a domain name would be example.com, or johndoe.com.au.

The domain name for Jessica Sutherland Design is jessicasuther.land.

Domain names include an extension, such as .com, .com.au, .org, .net, .me, and hundreds of others.

How to choose a domain name

  1. Make it short and memorable: A website should be easy to navigate too, so keep your domain name super short, and very memorable.
  2. Don’t include special characters and numbers: It can be super confusing to type a domain name in if it has numbers, and dashes add unnecessary complication.
  3. Always try for a .com: There are hundreds of new domain extensions such as .shop, .life and .tech, and more are added all the time. They may be modern and trendy, but the world hasn’t quite caught up to them yet, so always try to get a .com, .org, .org.au or .com.au domain first.
  4. Don’t violate copyright and trademark laws: Don’t register a domain that is already trademarked or copyrighted, you’ll end up in court.

Domain privacy protection

Domain registrant information is publicly accessible by a WHOIS lookup. This is required by the international industry regulator, ICANN. As a result, this can lead to unsolicited scam calls from this data, so we recommend enabling privacy protection on your domain.

A good domain name registrar won’t charge for this service.

It’s important you don’t provide false contact information on your domain registration. Domains are audited, and if discovered, your account could be suspended.

Where can I purchase a domain name?

Always buy domain names from companies that specialize in selling them, not website builders like Shopify or Squarespace. Don’t add any bundles, website hosting or other accessories to your purchase, either.

We recommend the following domain name providers: They offer the best prices, quality of service and customer support.

We love Google Domains, with free privacy protection, and reliable DNS on Google Infrastructure.

Porkbun is quite a unique registrar, with a ginormous selection of extensions and personalised customer support.

Namecheap has some great sales, a wide range of extensions and excellent prices.

Hover is a smaller and more focused company, offering bulk discounts and good customer service.

How much does a domain name cost?

The price of a domain name depends on what extension you choose. A .com, .com.au or other basic extensions will cost $10-$20 for 1 years registration. If you purchase multiple years at once, there may be a discount.

If your domain name is taken, you can hire a broker to purchase it from the current owner. But, if you held the copyright before it was registered, you should consult a lawyer.

Premium domain names may be enlisted on marketplaces for prices much higher than the retail rates.

Keep an eye out for sales, especially around black Friday, Christmas and the end of the financial year.

Business groups, chambers of commerce and other organizations also give away domain names sometimes.
